An insight into the career of Tim Port, Design Engineer with our Technical
Solutions Team
The staff at Loop Technologies are truly instrumental to the business, not just for day-to-day operations but for the ongoing success of the company. We thought it was time to start introducing you to some of the team helping to create behind the scenes magic. First up is Tim Port, Design Engineer who has been with Loop for 13 years.
From an early age Tim was very interested in computers and electronics so he attended Polytech and studied IT for 18 months after leaving secondary school. Following his studies, he joined his father in his workshop as an automotive mechanic for five years where he found his electronic knowledge to be particularly beneficial. In this role he learnt key skills around discipline, running a business and customer service but was looking for a step into something different.
In 2008 he applied for a role with Loop Technologies to clean and repackage cables, he was interviewed and given a facilities tour by Ross and Roger. Tim was in awe of the Loop operation especially the lab and knew instantly that it was where he wanted to build his career.
Given his background in IT the Loop management team immediately saw potential in Tim far beyond his role in cleaning and repackaging cables, and it wasn’t long before Tim had been selected as part of a team to set up repair of a new product, a hand-held scanner. Tim spent three years helping to build up this service to the point that there were six technicians working on repairs.
Tim worked on expanding his knowledge and experience with circuit boards and was excited to join the Transmission team in 2011 as a Technician with Glenn McCarthy providing mentorship.
During his time with the Transmission team, he worked on various programming and IT / design projects including writing software and developing a proof of concept for Nokia and undertaking repair work on the Nokia ISAM platform. One of his memorable projects included working on refurbishing and redesigning equipment for the Royal New Zealand Navy.
In 2017 Tim was excited to join the Technical Solutions Team, where he currently works as a Design Engineer specialising in embedded software.
His role includes developing innovative ideas for designs, providing solutions for customer issues, proof of concepts and constructing prototypes. He also continues to provide support for the repair side of the business particularly on technology that he has had a hand in setting up within the company.
